A North Carolina dog owner was horrified after the Graham County Assistant District Attorney came forward to remove his dog’s vocal cords in exchange for reducing charges for violating the noise of barking.
Michael Eddings, according to Newsweek, the owner of Leo, a seven-year-old Great Pyrenees, faces noise charges due to his dog’s barking. The surgical procedure known as devocalization has been inhumane through animal welfare organizations.
Eddings was fined more than $750 for noise-related infractions and legal fees. He explained that Leo’s barking is transmitted because it is a huge dog and weighs 120 pounds. Eddings maintains that there are other dogs barking in the community and he is singled out.
Surgery carries dangers such as infection, inflammation of the airways, cough, pneumonia, and gagging. In addition, animal behavior specialists cite that dogs revel in more physical threats, frustration and tension after wasting their ability to bark.
When Newsweek contacted Graham County District Attorney Ashley Welch about the suggestion to bark at the dog, she confirmed, whether the statements were joking or serious, that the suggestion was inappropriate.
Devocalization is prohibited in the UK and is prohibited in Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, California and Rhode Island.
