Fifth victim discovered in plane wreckage in southern Germany

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Police said Saturday that the body of a fifth victim was discovered during an exercise that derailed Friday in the southern German Alps.

The man’s body found out after the first attempts to lift the derailed cars failed. Recovery staff had to wait for a heavy crane to be brought to the site near the Garmisch-Partenkirchen beach hotel.

The cause of the derailment under investigation.

About 140 other people were in the exercise at the time, and they join the students returning from school for the Pentecost holiday. Police in the southern region of Bavaria said 44 other people were injured.

The regional exercise to Munich derailed on Friday afternoon in Burgrain after leaving the beach hotel from which it had broken down. Three of the double-decker cars overturned at least in part and other people were pulled out of the windows to get to safety.
