New coronavirus cases rose in Pennsylvania in the week ending Sunday, up 189. 6 as 21,316 cases were reported. Last week, there were 7,360 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Pennsylvania ranked 22nd among the states where the coronavirus spread the fastest, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University’s USA TODAY data network. In Pennsylvania, the worst weekly outbreaks per user occurred in Bradford County with 454 cases per 100,000 per week; Lackawanna County with 288; and Luzerne County with 252. The Centers for Disease Control says the network’s highest levels of transmission start at 100 instances per 100,000 per week.

Allegheny County, with 2702 instances, added the maximum number of new instances overall; Philadelphia County, with 2194 instances; and the county, with 1,900. The number of weekly instances increased in 67 counties compared to last week. Last week’s worst speed increases occurred in Allegheny and Delaware counties.

Pennsylvania ranked 13th among states in terms of the proportion of other people who received at least one vaccine, with 84. 9% of its citizens at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77. 7%, according to USA TODAY research using CDC data. In the week ending Wednesday, Pennsylvania said it administered an additional 126,842 doses of vaccines, 22,201 first doses. Last week, the state administered 319,300 doses of vaccines, 22,696 first doses. Overall, Pennsylvania reported administering 23,045,182 total doses.

In Pennsylvania, another 81 people were reported to have died from COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. Last week, another 55 people died.

A total of another 2,850,343 people in Pennsylvania have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and another 44,814 people have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Pennsylvania data from the Department of Health shows that COVID cases in the Poconos are emerging in another wave of the pandemic, with Monroe, Carbon, Lackawanna and Wayne counties reporting several cases that haven’t been noticed since February.

The COVID-19 Early Warning Watch Panel showed an increase in times shown for all Poconos and Lackawanna counties in its most recent readings May 4-10.

During the same period, Pike’s showed higher instances from 69 to 87, Carbon went from 101, Wayne went from 40 to 59, and Lackawanna went from 306 to 448.

The average number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 has declined particularly across the region, with Wayne County alone reporting a slight increase from 3. 1 to 3. 6.

The Pennsylvania COVID-19 dashboard shows a steady expansion in the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients (using a moving average of more than two weeks) since the beginning of mid-April, when Monroe saw rates as low as 4. 9. Currently, Monroe reports an average of 9. 5 hospitalized COVID-19 patients per day, and Carbon, Wayne, and Lackawanna counties have observed trends.

As of Tuesday, COVID-19 network levels in Monroe, Carbon and Pike counties are ranked as average, while Wayne and Lackawanna are classified as high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
