A retired NYPD officer arrested at the U. S. CapitolThe U. S. Navy on Friday with a fake badge, an airgun, frame armor, high-capacity magazines and other ammunition, the government said.
The early morning arrest at the site of the Jan. 6, 2021, uprising came after a U. S. Capitol police officer. The U. S. Department of Homeland Security began talking to a guy who had parked his 2017 Dodge Charger near Peace Circle on the west side of the Capitol, officials said.
Jerome Felipe, who retired from the NYPD in 2018, posted a fake plaque that read “INTERPOL Department” and pretended he was an investigator of the agency’s criminals, according to the Capitol Police.
Authorities Felipe, 53, now lives in Flint, Michigan.
Felipe allowed officials to search for his vehicle. Officers found an air gun, two ballistic vests, several high-capacity magazines and other ammunition in the car. No genuine weapons were found, officers said.
Investigators are still looking into why Felipe was stationed near the U. S. Capitol.
He faces charges of illegal ownership of high-capacity magazines and unregistered ammunition.
“We are cooperating with the U. S. Capitol Police investigation,” the spokesman said.
According to the department’s records, Felipe was a member of the department’s housing unit and had a civil complaint against him, which he considered unfounded.
