Memphis’ athletic program is undergoing changes.

After 10 seasons as the Tigers’ head athletic coach, Darrell Turner will assume the role of head athletic coach for Penny Hardaway’s men’s basketball program on an ongoing basis. Simmons, who resigned at one point before the 2021-22 season.

Turner, the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine, will continue to oversee the department.

In a corresponding move, Bryce Sorrier appointed head coach of athletic football. It began last week and the move was announced on Monday to the football team.

Sorrier comes to Memphis from Georgia Southern, where he spent the last two seasons as head athletic coach. Sorrier was hired at Georgia Southern as an assistant athletic trainer in the fall of 2018.

Memphis kicks off the 2022 season on Sept. 3 in the state of Mississippi (6:30 p. m. m. , ESPNU). The Tigers’ first game in the state of Arkansas is scheduled for Sept. 17 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium (6 p. m. , ESPN).

With Turner in place, Hardaway can focus on several other vacancies on his team, adding at least two assistant coach and director of basketball operations positions. The position of Chief Team Manager is also open as Ryan McPhail, who had been part of the program. since 2014, he has accepted some other position at the university outside of athletics.
