Illinois ranked seventh among the states where the coronavirus spread the fastest, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University’s USA TODAY data network. Illinois ranked 21st among states for the percentage of people who received at least one vaccine, with 76. 7% of its citizens at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77. 7%, according to USA TODAY research from CDC data. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most widely used in the United States, require two doses administered within a few weeks of each other.
In the week ending Wednesday, Illinois said it administered an additional 122,081 doses of vaccines, 11,405 first doses. Last week, the state administered 118,794 doses of vaccines, 14,140 first doses. Overall, Illinois reported administering a total of 22,673,553 doses.
In Illinois, the worst weekly outbreaks per user occurred in Logan County with 486 cases per 100,000 per week; Sangamon County with 473; and Peoria County with 390. The Centers for Disease Control says the network’s highest levels of transmission start at 100 instances per 100,000 per week.
Cook County, with 16,301 instances, added the maximum number of new instances overall; DuPage County, with 3,030 instances; and Lake County, with 2403. The number of weekly instances is higher in 54 counties than last week. Last week’s worst speed increases occurred in Sangamon, St. Clear and Peoria.
In Illinois, another forty-five people were reported to have died from COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. Last week, another 56 people died.
A total of another 3,286,377 people in Illinois have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and another 36,239 people have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, another 83,984,644 people tested positive and another 1,004,733 people died.
