An overnight chimney at Roy’s Towing and Recovery in West Des Moines destroyed 8 cars and broke 3 others, according to a news release from the West Des Moines Fire Department.
Firefighters responded around 1:20 a. m. Tuesday at Roy’s Towing and Recovery, 155 S. 13th St. in West Des Moines, after a neighbor called 911 to report the fire.
“When firefighters arrived, they discovered several burning cars in the back of the company,” he said. “Teams were able to secure an opening through a door and began extinguishing the flames. “
A total of 11 cars were affected by the fire, 8 of which were destroyed.
“It appears that the chimney exploded in the trunk of a hybrid electric vehicle where the battery is located,” according to the statement.
No injuries were reported. Initial estimates total $245,000.
