Deborah Birx, a prominent member of the Trump administration’s White House Coronavirus Task Force, said Sunday that the United States is ready for a potential new rise in COVID-19 after a recent spike in infections in South Africa.

“They’re on an upward slope again,” Birx of infections in South Africa on CBS’s “Face the Nation. “

“Each of those outbreaks has an interval of 4 to 6 months. This tells me that herbal immunity decreases enough in the general population after 4 to 6 months for a significant outbreak to reoccur. And that’s what we want to prepare you for in this country,” he added.

Birx, in particular, warned that Americans “are now preparing for possible construction this summer in the southern United States. “

Birx has been criticized for not further denouncing former President Trump’s false claims about the coronavirus during his time in the White House.

In his new book, he talks about his internal efforts to push back like his first meeting with Trump, which he says lasted 30 seconds before he switched to Fox News.

His comments come after South Africa saw a first spike in infections after the highly contagious variant of omicron was first detected there last year.

More recently, South Africa has recorded more than 31,000 cases of COVID-19 in the past week, which is still lower than the more than 140,000 cases reported at the height of the omicron surge in December, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

The country recorded about 5,700 new cases on Saturday, far more than the figures of around 1,400 cases early last month.
