The alliance said Friday that the planes took off “several times” from April 26 to 29 to unidentified planes over the seas before confirming them as Russian planes.
“Russian military aircraft occasionally do not transmit the transponder code indicating their position and altitude, do not record a flight plan or talk to air traffic controllers, posing a potential threat to civilian aircraft,” NATO said in a statement on flights.
Although NATO did not specify how many Russian aircraft were met in the week, or precisely how many times its own pilots were sent for interception missions, it showed that the planes did not enter NATO airspace and that NATO pilots had no interaction beyond the warning. NATO aircraft were sent to the Baltic and Black Seas from bases in Uedem, Germany and Torrejón, Spain, with pilots from the UK, Romania, Spain, Poland, France and Denmark participating in interception missions.
This is the first time NATO and Russian pilots have had meetings like this. In early February, before the war in Ukraine began, American, British and Norwegian aircraft took off to identify and track Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea and the Barents Sea in northern Europe. As on this week’s flights, the Russians had informed other air traffic controllers of their planes, and NATO planes intercepted them without incident or the Russians entered NATO airspace.
NATO countries have taken steps to avoid confrontations with Russia and its war with Ukraine, fearing a broader and intensified conflict. The United States withdrew its educational forces from the country when the war began. Meanwhile, several member countries have provided weapons and apparatus to Ukrainian forces. Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced it would send 72 artillery pieces and 121 drones to Ukraine. Russia in turn called NATO, it is not easy to prevent arming the country it is invading, according to Jazeera English.
On the ground, Russia has repositioned and reorganized its forces in Ukraine over the past week. Since it failed to take Kiev, Russia has withdrawn its troops eastward to resupply. the city, and is focusing on an attack in the eastern region of Donbass.
