The Japanese-inspired Honka Haiku, which is being built for Naantali’s living room, is in harmony with the nature around it: the connection with nature, the naturalness of the fabrics and the wise answers for an environmentally friendly life provide lasting luxury.

Honka Haiku is the result of a collaboration between architect Marko Simsiö, interior designer Maru Hautala and landscape architect Asako Hashimoto. The trendy log house, which has attractive architectural elements, is located on the charming grounds of the archipelago in a way that respects nature and protects the rocky terrain and pine forest. Inside, the wood will be left visually bold in many places. A Japanese lawn will be created outside and the sauna domain will feature an exclusive onsen-style spa.

“A fireplace in the fireplace, loose river stones around the tub and a view of the beautiful pine forest bring a touch of luxury. The spa will be an exception to the conscientious design capacity of the rest of the building: its only goal is to help citizens calm down and have fun,” says Maru Hautala.

Honka Haiku will be the number 3 site of the Naantali Housing Fair. “He encouraged me through the shape of the plot. The first thing I designed next to the rock is the protected courtyard around which the building will be built,” says Marko Simsiö. Simsiö is an award-winning young architect and founding partner of KOAN Architecture, which specializes in sustainable design.

“Single-storey construction has a sober appearance and sophisticated colors that help it blend in with the landscape. Long eaves frame the corridors along the walls,” explains Simsiö, describing Japanese influences in the design. The line between indoor and outdoor spaces is in constant motion. The relaxing patio serves as an extension of the living and dining room, and also merges with the terrace and spa section. Everything is open and personal at the same time.

What elements do you need to live?

Honka’s haiku aesthetic is timelessly minimalist, but in a natural, herbal way,” says interior designer Maru Hautala. “In my opinion, what makes this house sumptuous are the high-quality herbal materials, the possible sustainable options, and the original, local products. There is nothing dead in Honka Haiku. Hautala hopes the answers will motivate visitors to reflect on their own life-like values. “What elements are vital to living?”

The Japandi taste is reflected, for example, in the shapes, textures, the use of wooden slats and the sophisticated color palette. We show how other species and shades of wood can be boldly combined inside a wooden space. Oak and ash from The color of herbs is used along with spruce. The space will be built through local professionals from the Naantali region, and almost all of the apparatus will be provided through Turku-based Ville Aakula.

The backyard will be as harmonious as the house. The Japanese lawn symbolizes a total landscape. The front backyard represents water and islands with wildflowers. Seen from the living room, the beds and plants shape a landscape painting, with the window as a frame. On a Japanese lawn, the backyard merges with nature. The herbal landscape calms the mind,” says landscape architect Asako Hashimoto.
