After a two-year hiatus due to a pandemic, the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade returns to Fifth Avenue on Thursday.
The parade, which attracts thousands of revelers, begins at 11 a. m. m. , with protesters on Fifth Avenue on 44th Street, up to 79th Street to East 79th Street (see street closures below).
In 2020, the parade was canceled on March 10, just a week before the scheduled date, and because the extent of the pandemic is still unclear. People were still flocking to nightclubs when the resolution was made, but on March 22, the city closed.
No parades were held in 2021 until later in the year, when city officials allowed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade to return. Organizers of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade applauded in November: “We look forward to greeting everyone in 2022 on Fifth Avenue as we celebrate 260 years of walking (since 1762) through the streets of New York in honor of St. Patrick’s legacy, our Irish heritage and culture. “
There will be a minute’s silence at 12 noon. On Thursday, held by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral to “commemorate the twentieth anniversary of September 11 and those affected by the pandemic,” according to organizers, who specify that participants in the parade will turn south, towards the central World Trade Place. Members of the bands FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority and 69th Regiment will play “Taps” and “Amazing Grace”.
A vital reminder: Alcohol is banned on MTA trains and, in recent years, the company banned alcohol for 24 hours on St. Patrick’s Day from its services, such as Grand Central Terminal. Internal public shipping stations.
