5G Challenge will drive adoption of 5G open interfaces
LOUISVILLE, Colo. , March 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — CableLabs, the leading laboratory for innovation, research and progress for the broadband cable industry, has been designated through the United States Department of Commerce as host of the National Telecommunications and Information Institute for Telecommunications Science Administration 5G Challenge (NTIA-ITS). NTIA-ITS is recently involved in the design and execution of the 5G Challenge at the Department of Defense’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Development. The festival requires a host lab with a 5G core network, verification and measurement capabilities. “CableLabs is revered as the host lab for the 5G Challenge,” said Phil McKinney, Chairman and CEO of CableLabs. “The popularity of the US Department of Commerce is a deterrent to CableLabs’ continued investment and development in cellular wireless network technologies and, in particular, our focus on open and interoperable network technologies. We are committed to continued study and verification of progression and interoperability in cellular network technologies, and we look forward to the opportunity to serve as the host lab for the 5G Challenge.
NTIA-ITS will leverage CableLabs’ state-of-the-art lab implementation of fully virtualized 5G networks, adding multiple cores, multiple radio access networks, and new network emulation equipment. CableLabs provides the autonomous 5G network with the critical engineering capability to integrate multiple vendors while testing and measuring technical functionality metrics, enabling innovators to compete in on-site testing and validation. with multiple vendors to drive interoperable network technologies.
The purpose of the 5G Challenge is to help drive the widespread progression and deployment of open 5G networks. It is designed to drive the adoption of open 5G interfaces, interoperable parts, and multi-vendor responses by fostering a broad, vibrant and developing vendor network committed to advancing 5G interoperability to a true plug-and-play operation. The U. S. government The U. S. and The Department of Defense have established 5G as a key modernization priority and the 5G challenge in particular addresses the move toward employing open deployments for parts of a 5G system.
