BERLIN (Reuters) – Membership of the European Union takes place in a matter of months, but Ukraine is part of the “house of Europe” in which it is welcome, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday.

“And it’s not that we woke up in another global just now because the European Union has been a space whose doors were open,” Baerbock told a joint news conference after an assembly with his Slovenian counterpart Anze Logar.

He added that Ukraine’s accession would not mean the EU sought to separate it from Russia, but would reflect the preference of many Ukrainians to join. The EU is not the only European framework for maintaining the peace and security that countries can join, he added.
