OGDEN — Two Weber County citizens are accused of locking an elderly man with a dirty catheter in a room and taking cash out of his bank account, to their knowledge.
Sooletiti Langi, 53, of South Ogden, and Pam Langi, 55, of Ogden, face charges of exploiting a vulnerable adult, a second-degree felony, and abusing or neglecting a vulnerable adult, a third-degree felony.
Last August, South Ogden police won a call that a neighbor had heard a 79-year-old man screaming for help, according to fee documents. Police later discovered that the man, who was walking and had a catheter, was locked up. a room in the house. An officer exited through a window and found that the bedroom and bathroom locks in the suite were inverted, preventing the man from leaving the room, according to rate documents. The boy’s phone was also unhooked and his catheter was not connected to a collection bag.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where staff told police the catheter had not been cleaned or replaced in the past six weeks and that the man had a urinary tract infection.
During their hospital stay, the two Langis arrived and reportedly told police they were the guy’s guards. the stove or “move away,” according to the fare documents. Police allege the two men later said the guy didn’t have a diagnosis that could impede his ability to use the stove and that the guy hadn’t gone astray.
Sooletiti Langi reportedly told police that Pam Langi had paid the boy’s phone bill for two weeks because she “wanted to take a break” from his calls, according to fee documents. He also told police he gave the boy alcohol and a sleeping pill. before closing the doors so that he can faint at night when the old man fell asleep.
The elder told police he moved to Utah from California and that Pam Langi moved in with him as a nanny, they don’t have a contractual agreement.
Police then reviewed the man’s monetary records and found he had sold a trailer in California and transferred $80,000 to his bank account on May 25. On the same day, there were 3 withdrawals totaling $25,400. Between June 9 and 29, more than $24,000 was withdrawn from the account at Utah banks, according to billing documents.
On July 23, the elderly man allegedly tried to load Pam Langi into his account, but the bank rejected the request because the man “did not have a death certificate from his wife,” according to charging documents. During the same visit, the Guy made a $7,000 withdrawal and attempted to move the cash to Pam Langi’s account. However, the guy’s account was flagged by the bank for possible fraud because he had withdrawn more than $50,000 in less than forty-five days without primary purchases, according to billing. documents.
The elder told police he paid Pam Langi $20,000 for her care services. He also allegedly told police that she had his non-public identity number and that she allowed her to make ATM withdrawals for him, according to the fee documents. to account for all cash made in withdrawals.
In an interview with police, the Langis allegedly told police they had been victims of a “Bitcoin scam” and used the man’s cash without their knowledge, according to charging documents.
Opposing charges were filed against the two in January, court records imply that initial appearance dates in Ogden 2d District Court were missed.
However, court records show Pam Langi was later jailed and an arrest warrant was withdrawn on Thursday. His next court hearing is scheduled for March 2.
On Monday, court records did not imply that Sooletiti Langi was arrested by police. Court records and a search of an online page of the Utah Department of Public Safety show an active warrant against his arrest.
