WASHINGTON (AP) — President Vladimir Putin’s order to put Russian nuclear forces on high alert on Dec. 27 is part of a Moscow scheme that fabricates threats to justify aggression, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Sunday.
“We’ve noticed him doing this over and over again. At no point did Russia threaten through NATO, Russia did not threaten through Ukraine,” Psaki said on ABC’s “This Week. “
“All this is a style of President Putin and we will oppose him. We have the ability to protect ourselves, but we also want to call what we see here from President Putin,” Psaki added.
The United States is in a position to provide more assistance to Ukraine, Psaki said. Washington has also not been spared sanctions on Russia’s electricity sector from the table, Psaki added.
“We haven’t gotten rid of them, but we also need to do that and make sure we minimize the impact on the global market and do it together,” Psaki said.
