A total of 874 cars caught fire across France on New Year’s Eve in a decades-long tradition.

But with the implementation of coronavirus-related restrictions, this is lower than in previous years, according to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

A total of 1,316 cars caught fire in 2019, according to a Saturday issued through the Interior Ministry.

However, more people were arrested than in previous years, 441 arrested up from 376 in 2019.

In Strasbourg, in northeastern France, another 31 people were arrested after cars and garbage cans were turned on.

Six of those interviewed were minors who violated the curfew, while the others were linked to an alleged arson, according to the Strasbourg government, which also showed that 4 police officers suffered minor injuries.

Despite coronavirus restrictions, at the Yonne branch in central France, the government said an illegal party of another 1,500 people was still underway on Saturday at noon local time, with police forces at the scene watching the situation, the government said in a statement.

An investigation will be opened for “illegal organization of a festive musical encounter,” he added.
