Greensburg adds takeaways this summer

Greensburg is adding a takeaway to your footprint to make sure locals have to eat this summer.

It will open in collaboration with the Westmoreland County Food Bank in Kirk S. Nevin Arena at Lynch Field Park on June 21. The program will provide food for participants in the city’s summer camp program, but will also be open to all children. Lydia Kinkaid, director of the Greensburg recreation program.

“It’s anything I was looking to do, ” said Kinkaid. ” I grew up going to other parks and making summer meals there, so it was something I was familiar with as a child and I know that many other people really get advantages In fact, it’s helping us with our summer camp, because then we probably wouldn’t have to rely on parents to prepare food. “

The site is part of the food bank’s summer catering program, which has been providing breakfast and lunch to youth in the county for 30 years. According to the food bank’s website, the program lasts 8 weeks each summer, providing loose breakfast and lunch. 20 other sites.

According to Lauren Hill, director of progression at the food bank, another takeaway site in the domain is located at the South Greensburg Recreation Center.

“We just need to make sure certain kids have access to the food they need, especially in the summer, when school opens,” Hill said.

According to Feeding America, a national banking organization, one in seven children in Pennsylvania is starving, or about 383,520 children.

“Because it’s takeaway, we hope it inspires participation so that other people can simply pick up food and take them home safely or maybe stay in the park and eat them there,” Hill said. “Anyway, (we) just need to increase participation by making it as undeniable as possible. “

Kinkaid noted that officials expect more young people to participate in takeaway week and added that he hoped the program would be able to continue in the summer.

Questions about the program, which runs until August 13, can be addressed to Michelle Heller, Director of Programs at the Food Bank, calling her at 724-468-8660, section 25.

“I’m excited about it and we have the opportunity to distribute food to young people who love them or their families who would benefit from them,” Kinkaid said.
