Social media giant Twitter said today that it deleted about 130 Iranian Twitter accounts for seeking to disrupt last night’s public verbal exchange in the first presidential debate for the 2020 U. S. presidential election.
Twitter said it was aware of the accounts on advice from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. But it’s not the first time
“We knew those accounts quickly, deleted them from Twitter and shared all the main points with our peers, as standard,” the social network said today.
“They [the accounts] had a very low commitment and had no effect on public conversation,” he added.
Twitter has announced plans to post main points about deleted accounts and their tweets in the segment of its Transparency for Influence Operations portal.
The social network said earlier this year that it expected to see attempts to manipulate public debate over the upcoming U. S. presidential election in the run-up to November 3. In August, Twitter also deleted user accounts by sharing the same message about making plans to vote for Donald Trump, a strategy the corporation described as an impersonator.
The company also began calling tweets misleading if they provided erroneous data on voting and the electoral process. Twitter used the new feature to put precautionary tags on several of Donald Trump’s tweets during the summer and early fall.
Today’s crackdown also marks the time this month when Twitter intervened to end an influence operation on its online page on the FBI’s recommendation. In the past, Twitter had deleted accounts connected to PeaceData, a news site that published misleading articles about global politics, which the FBI said was a Russian-influenced operation.
