Live updates as protesters put a blockade on the incinerator site

Protesters are preparing another day of protest in Cardiff.

They have put in place a lock on the Viridor incinerator at Trident Park in Splott, claiming that they are pointing out what they say is the unfairness of plans to build an incinerator for the time being at the domain via the giant incinerator group, Mor Hafren.

Plans for the 150 million pound power plant, which would be on Newlands Road, east of the city.

Melissa Carrington, an environmental consultant, said: “Building more incinerators based on a ‘waste of energy’ style does not mean the transition to a low-carbon economy, but allows for the economical use of waste, which helps to keep the public addicted to binge drinking. “

Catherine McArthur, a local resident who opposes the plans, said: “This incinerator will be just 700 metres from The Eastern High School, where my children go to school and we are outraged.

“Cardiff East is preparing a garbage sale for everyone else.”

Protesters say many citizens of the city’s CF3 postcode area, including Llanrumney, Rumney, Tremorfa, St Mellons and Trowbridge, have been campaigning against the new incinerator’s plans since September 2019.

Catherine McArthur, one of the citizens who opposes the plans, said: “This incinerator will be just 700 metres from Eastern High School where my young people go to school and we’re outraged, what chance do they have? The school already has nearly part of participants eligible for loose school meals, more than double the national average.

“Cardiff East is preparing a liquidation for everyone else’s waste. The World Health Organization advises opposing the construction of incinerators in residential areas, much less near a school. It is scandalous that Cogen is forgetting the fitness of generations past in Wales and it is hypocritical for the Welsh Assembly to match this request because it violates their own law on long-term generations as well as all their aspirations to move to a zero waste circular economy.

“How long is it if your zip code puts you in danger from the air you breathe?”

South Wales police said there had been no arrests and no one inside the building.

There’s a police presence at the site.

Protesters say they already turned down four trucks this morning.

Protesters marched at the Splott early Friday morning and set up camp.

There are reports that another 8 people are locked in at the time of the building floor.
