Thompson’s circle of relatives announced his death the previous Monday.

“We are heartbroken in sharing the news of our father’s passing, John Thompson Jr. Our father was an inspiration to many and committed his life to the progress of other young people not only on the basketball court, but especially off the basketball court.He is respected as a former shepherd of sport, committed to the well-being of his network above all, however, for us, his greatest legacy remains as a father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

“More than a coach, it was our foundation. More than a legend, it was the voice in our ears every day.We will miss him, but we are founded on the assurance that we bring his religion and determination into us.We will cherish for toujours.sa strength, courage, wisdom, and boldness, as well as their unwavering love.We know that many will miss you and our circle of family members appreciates your condolences and prayers.But don’t worry about him, because as he liked to say, ‘….’Big Ace is great.”

Thompson resigned from education in 1999 and then joined the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Thompson replaced through longtime assistant coach Craig Esherick.Esherick lasted until 2004 and was replaced through Thompson’s son, John Thompson III.
