Fatality on the Sheerness Generation site

Hanna lost a member of the network on August 27 when David Cox, a father of four school-age children, died in a Calgary hospital after being injured at the Sheerness power plant.

STARS Air Ambulance responded to the station on August 27, airlifting cox to Calgary Foothills Medical Center, after being sent at 12:55 p.m.

Owned by operators TransAlta and Calgary Heartland Generation, the company issued on August 28 confirming Cox’s death.

“We are deeply saddened to lose a member of our team and our mind is with the circle of family members and co-workers.We continue to investigate this incident very well and are working hard with all applicable authorities,” he said.

Hanna CAO Kim Neill added on August 28 that, “From the perspective of the network, this is a very unhappy situation, and we feel for the circle of family and friends of the deceased, as well as colleagues and lifeguards.

In an effort to mitigate the monetary effect of the sudden loss of Cox’s circle of friends, Taylor Bailey has introduced a Go Fund Me program for the family circle.

The online reaction to the incident demonstrates the ordinary network spirit in the Hanna area, as in 3 days they surpassed their modest target of $20,000 to $34,679.

“In a horrible twist of fate in the office that resulted in the death of her father and her husband, this circle of family members wants comfort and doesn’t have to worry about anything monetary right now,” Baileys says on the GoFundMe page.

“David was the ultimate man, father, son, husband, uncle and friend. Our little network is suffering a massive loss and I hoped we could give Shantel and her children some peace of mind in those difficult times of their lives..

The Go Fund Me page is a tribute to the spirit of the community, as members accumulate individual donations ranging from $100 to $500, with more than 218 donations, usually from local families.

For those who wish to contribute, the fundraising page can be found here.
