TORONTO (AP) – Scott Laughton had two goals and lending a hand to the Philadelphia Flyers beat Washington Capitals 3-1 on Thursday.
Travis Sanheim also scored and Brian Elliott stopped 16 shots to turn the Flyers into one of the NHL groups. The Flyers won nine consecutive games before wasting the last one before COVID-19 stopped. The Flyers resumed the season with victories over Boston and the Capitals in the NHL playoff circular and can’t finish worse than the moment in the Eastern Conference.
The Flyers will face Tampa Bay on Saturday. The winner will win the Eastern lead.
Laughton gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the first half after taking credit for a rotation by beating Braden Holtthrough. Laughton scored again to score 3-0 in the third.
Kevin Hayes had 3 assists for the Flyers in his first 3-point playoff game, and Travis Konecny had two assists.
“Great game @NHLFlyers. Our intensity is visible,” tweeted Eric Lindros, a Flyers retiree.
Travis Boyd scored for the Capitals on a detour on the third to bring the score to 3-1.
NOTES: The Flyers scratched F James van Riemsdyk and Capitals D John Carlson didn’t play either. Carlson has not played since he began his third stint in a July 29 exhibition game opposite Carolina. The Flyers put the van Riemsdyk in free fall.
Following
Washington will face Boston on Saturday and the Flyers will face Tampa Bay on Saturday to conclude the three-game series against all.
