Alumni Cash reinstalls University of Alberta hockey for next season

The University of Alberta’s men’s and women’s hockey has been reinstated for next season thanks to donor monetary contributions.

Edmonton University discontinued hockey, basketball and volleyball for 2020-21 due to monetary pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced investment from the provincial government.

The Golden Bears and Pandas will be able to skate in groups next season thanks to “student support,” the university said on an online page at its track and box on Thursday.

Alberta announced a break for the 3 on June 17.

Schools will have to claim their sports until June 30 for next season, requiring approval from the Western Conference of Canada to re-establish Alberta’s hockey teams.

The convention gave the go-ahead to team returns thursday following a request last week.

“Our West Canada Board understands that we are not treating companies as usual and that we need flexibility for us to do everything we can to get our members to navigate those dubious times,” convention president Clint Hamilton said in a statement.

“If we think we can imagine a Western Canada hockey calendar for this season, we’re pleased that the systems of the gold bears and pandas at the University of Alberta participate.”

Canada West has canceled team sports for the remainder of 2020 due to public aptitude considerations about the pandemic.

The resolution to start the seasons in January will be taken until October 8.

The Golden Bears won the top men’s national hockey championship in tournament history with 16.
