Jamie Samuelsen, a longtime voice on Detroit’s sports media scene, died Saturday after a long war against colon cancer. 48th.

Samuelsen was diagnosed with colon cancer 19 months ago, but maintained his personal condition until last week.

He is survived by his wife, Christy McDonald, and 3 children, Caroline, 16; Josh, 14; and Catherine, 11.

Samuelsen has spent most of his professional career in the Detroit market, recently at WXYT co-presenting the morning exhibition “Jamie and Stoney” with Heather Park since 2016. Prior to that, Samuelsen spent time at WDFN, WRIF and WCSX on radio, Fox 2 on television and wrote blog posts on Freep.com for more than a decade.

One of Samuelsen’s longtime radio and television cohorts, Detroit News columnist Bob Wojnowski, announced Samuelsen’s death on Twitter Saturday night in the name of the family circle. Wojnowski said Samuelsen “circled his glorious circle of relatives and left peacefully.”

Samuelsen informed his audience Monday of his diagnosis and spoke to the loose press about his diagnosis, saying he had remained silent with his children.

“Obviously, all our lives turned upside down when we found out, but we were looking for their lives to be as general as possible,” he said. “Also, as I painted on the radio and my wife painted on tv, I searched to make sure it wasn’t.

“The most moving moments for me, this story, have been the truth of the family,” Samuelsen said.

Samuelsen grew up in Northern California and began his career in Chicago in the mid-1990s after graduating from the Northwest.
