LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two hospital systems in Louisville, U of L Health and Baptist Health, are receiving a total of $42.5 million in a new series of COVID-19 federal relief budget establishments affected by the pandemic.
U of L will get $30.6 million, while Baptist will get $11.9 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Provider Assistance Fund. HHS distributed approximately $150 million to Kentucky hospitals, adding $88 million to U of L, Baptist and six others.
The bills were part of two rounds of bills under the federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Aid, and Economic Security) law for hospitals that had to spend more than they needed to deal with the epidemic. Many hospitals have landed in red after being forced to cancel lucrative elective surgeries and spend more on increased disinfection, protective appliances and critical patient care.

“Early estimates imply that the negative effect of COVID-19 could exceed $100 million for our system,” Tom Miller, executive director of L Health’s U Health, said Friday in a statement released in the workplace of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Miller credited McConnell for leading the CARES U-L investment by racking up expenses, adding telehealth, advancing disinfection protocols and 4 flying coronavirus test sites.
HHS previously reported that $10 billion distribution bills would be sent to more than 1,000 hospitals nationwide starting July 20.
The most recent investment was based on a formula for hospitals with more than 161 admissions to COVID-19 between 1 January and 10 June 2020. He went to more than 1,000 establishments. Also eligible were those who were inconsistent with a disproportionate “COVID income intensity” that exceeded an average proportion of coVID income consistent with the bed. The formula is based on $50,000 according to admission, according to HHS.
In May, the company announced a first “high-effect on financing” circular totaling $12 billion to 395 hospitals. It provided approximately $77,000 consistent with admission, for every hundred coVID-19 patients or more hospitals have attended from the start of the pandemic through April 10.
