JOHANNESBURG – South Africa on Saturday surpassed 500,000 cases of COVID-19, representing more than 50% of all coronavirus infections reported in African countries.
Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize announced 10,107 new instances on Saturday night, bringing the country’s cumulative total to 503,290, 8,153 deaths.
South Africa, with a population of about 58 million, has the fifth-highest number of cases in the world, behind the U.S., Brazil, Russia and India, all countries with significantly higher populations, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Experts say the true toll of the pandemic worldwide is much higher than confirmed cases, due to limited testing and other reasons.
Gauteng Province in South Africa, which includes Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, and Pretoria, the capital, is the country’s epicentre with more than 35% of its cases shown. Local hospitals are suffering to cope, and fitness experts say the country could succeed at the peak of its epidemic in August or early September.
Cape Town, a city popular with foreign tourists in the far south of the country, the first epicenter and peaked last month, according to fitness experts.

WASHINGTON – Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona says he has coronavirus.
The Democrat says he tested positive for coronavirus a few days after sitting next to the member, Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, who announced a positive check this week.
Grivalva, 72, is at least the eleventh congressman known to have tested for the virus.
Gohmert, a Republican, questioned the wearing of the mask and walked through the Capitol without one.
Grijalva issued an Array saying in part: “This week has shown that some members of Congress do not take this crisis seriously. Many Republican members regularly strut around the Capitol without a mask to make a self-centered policy at the expense of their colleagues, staff and families.

ATHENS, Greece – The Greek government says 110 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the fourth highest number and the highest since April.
Authorities say 23 of the cases concerned meat processing workers in the northern city of Kavala. Tests on all 140 workers are still ongoing. Ten other instances concerned other people attending a wedding in the northern city of Thessaloniki, the largest moment in Greece.
Only in cases were they incoming travellers.
Greece has a total of 4,587 exhibits and 206 deaths, with no deaths reported on Saturday.

HEREBATON RED, Louisiana – Two federal judges in Louisiana have refused to prevent the application of Governor John Bel Edwards’ coronavirus ordinance that prohibits bars from allowing consumers to drink on site.
Federal District Judge Robert Summerhays in Lafayette friday rejected a transitional restraining order requested from 11 Acadiana-area bar owners who filed a complaint against Edwards’ ruling restricting delivery and delivery prohibitions.
