It’s time for New Yorkers to plan when and where they’ll get their vaccine, the coronavirus vaccine, which is still in progress, the flu vaccine.
City officials expect the first shipment of this year’s flu vaccine to arrive from mid-August to August.
“This is the year getting a flu shot is even more important,” said Dr. Oxiris Barbot, commissioner of the city’s fitness department.
Public exercise experts say the pandemic gives two new reasons to get vaccinated against the flu. First, the first symptoms of influenza and COVID-19 are fever, aches, coughs.
“Because they are difficult to distinguish clinically, it is more vital to do everything possible to avoid the flu,” explained Dr. Edward Chapnick, Director of Infectious Diseases at Maimonides Medical Center. “In fact, it will help the reasons why a disease spreads.”
There is also a desire to conserve fitness resources, which means causing as many New Yorkers as imaginable to be hospitalized for influenza, so that beds can be separated for others with COVID-19 in case of a peak moment.
Last season, more than 22,000 people with influenza were hospitalized in the city and state.
“What helps me stay awake at night is that few New Yorkers get vaccinated against the flu, we end up having a season of severe flu in addition to a wave of moments and we don’t need each other. We, as a people, work too hard to get there. where we are, ” said Barbot.
According to the city’s fitness department, nearly one in two New Yorkers receives the flu shot. But this year he’s aiming higher, hoping to get about 70%. The strategy is to marry network leaders, who will allocate a percentage to the message that flu vaccines are effective.
“Now, if your definition of effectiveness is 100 percent, well, it’s definitely not one hundred percent effective,” Chapnick explained. “Most years are around 50%, and it’s been a long time since I took the fundamental arithmetic, however, I think the number 50 is much higher than number 0.”
“What’s the problem?” Added Dr. Miriam Smith, Head of the Department of Medicine at LIJ Forest Hills. “In addition to local inconvenience at the injection site, there is no problem getting vaccinated. It is strongly recommended.”
New Yorkers start getting the flu shot as soon as it will be applied in August, Barbot said.
Anyone can place a vaccination location on the New York Health Map on the city’s website.
