Welcome to the confused world of quarantines.
To keep the coronavirus outbreak from spreading through their regions, 19 states and the District of Columbia ask or require out-of-state visitors to self-quarantine for two weeks upon arrival. But rules vary widely and change with the COVID-19 numbers, with different penalties (if any) for noncompliance and definitions of what quarantine means. (See state list below.)
“There’s not a consistent message in every state, and it’s incredibly complicated for travelers,” said Jan L. Jones, a hotel and tourism professor at the new University of Haven in Connecticut. “I can’t even sail it.”
Rhode Island, which calls anyone on a list of more than 30 states to quarantine for two weeks, allows other quarantined people to “unload essential things like food, gas or medicine, which drop or pick up youth at day care, summer camps. “For medical care and attending funerals or memorial services” arrangement. However, in Vermont, “quarantine means staying in a space or home for 14 days before doing outdoor activities, such as buying groceries. or assembly with friends or family.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that when you travel, ask:
Many states, such as Pennsylvania, offer their quarantine policies in the form of recommendations, with no penalty for non-compliance. “If I’m from New York, Florida, it’s up to me to quarantine myself, nobody’s looking at me,” says Heather Julie Gibson, associate director of the Department of Tourism at the University of Florida at Gainesville.
But other states are much more serious. Hawaii is perhaps most important: desperate to keep the number of COVID-19 cases low, the state has discouraged visitors from the Americas, and those who arrive will have to be quarantined or face illegal sanctions. About 200 visitors were reportedly arrested for rapes (including a woman who posted photos on social media of herself dining in Honolulu while destined to be quarantined). Visitors must also respond to a daily online checkup that confirms their fitness and quarantine.
Determine which climbers deserve quarantine in which states a study project would possibly be performed. For example, Vermont quarantine regulations are based on the number of COVID-19 instances throughout the county; its online page includes a map of the northeastern United States, indicating whether escalators in each county will want to be quarantined for two weeks upon arrival in Vermont (if their county is green, it is able to make a stopover without quarantine) )
