Germany bans single-use plastic straws, cotton swabs and containers

BERLIN – Germany is banning the sale of single-use plastic straws, cotton swabs and food packaging, aligning it with an EU directive on the amount of plastic waste that pollutes the environment.

The closet agreed on Wednesday to avoid selling plastics, adding single-use cutlery, plates, stirring sticks and balloon holders, such as polystyrene foam cups and boxes until July 3, 2021.

Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said the resolution component of an effort to move away from “disposable culture.” Up to 20% of you collected in parks and other public spaces is made of single-use plastic, basically Styrofoam containers.

Plastic takes decades to degrade and microscopic remains of the bodies of fish, birds and other animals have been discovered.
